First off, you'll want to make sure you have a working SD card inserted into the back of the TR-8S. A blank pattern and kit for the tr8s - backup your current stuff before use! The tr8s irritates me, because at that money you should just buy a digitakt. I didnt like the user interface either. MPC can do that too using the step sequencer and a kit with Roland samples but the TR8S is a lot more hands on and immediate for step sequencing. TR-8S. I like the TR8s in the studio but the TR8 is much more hands on, have better spacings on the knobs and faders and to me much more direct and streamlined in live situations. It’s so hands on. As a standalone instrument, the TR8S is very fun to perform on (especially with the faders), but the elektron workflow feels much more expressive for me and I love the display and the deep editing it offers. The TR8S was going to be my next purchase as I love the old school drum machine layout and the individual outs but I too hate the idea of no song mode. Compared to TR8S it is a bit menu divey, and the Roland paradigm is quite different than Elektron. After that, you would connect the TR8S to your computer via USB and turn it on. Many of the preset sounds can be improved with editing. But with the Tr8s you have it for each sounds and Tr6s shares the 3 knobs for each of the sounds. TR8S is really great for playing live and if you buy one or have played one you’ll see that it was made for live performances. I’ve had the TR8S for a couple/few months now and still can’t import files. IMO for recording get the Rytm, for live playing get the TR8S.
